New Hall Table
This side hallway table was custom made for our customer out of highly figured maple. The bow ties are hand carved out or saple wood, and the base is made out of hard white maple. I wanted to create a very light table, both literally and visually, so the table itself looks like it is almost floating. The green cross members in milk paint offer a pop of organic colour, in a velvet texture, opposing the texture of the legs and top. I have a different design process from what other people might have. I do not sit down and map out angles, measurements and have a highly detailed map of plans. Instead it usually starts as a thought that then comes into form as I am riding my bike. Designs are based more on a feeling I want to convey than anything, and I usually spend several hours refining that feeling and corresponding design, but it is all in my head. I work methodically through the building process and let that first idea or feeling guide me. Usually the first mockup piece is good, but it needs refinement, either in size of scale or form. Like designing a plated dessert, it is usually a safe bet that by the six time, you have something that you can be proud of. I have found this is a process that cannot be rushed, as new techniques may have to be learned, and problems solved.
